20th Anniversary Commemoration Of The UNSCR 1325 Held

 

Exactly 20 years ago, the UNSCR 1325 resolution was adopted. APSTA was represented at the Symposium in commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325). The symposium was hosted by the Kofi Annan International Peace Training Center (KAIPTC) under the distinguished Chairmanship of His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for the Office for West Africa and Sahel (UNOWAS).

The symposium focused on the theme “Beyond 2020: Building Local Capacity to advance the WPS Agenda in West Africa and the Sahel”

The following facts among other valuable points were raised during the 4-hour webinar session by participants, special dignitaries, Sponsors, donors and Women and Gender led groups :

  • The need to help accelerate the WPS Agenda beyond 2020
  • Help to fully implement the Maputo Protocol through capacity building and research
  • Push the Agenda towards strategic objectives with SMART avenues
  • Recognize and advance women’s participation in peace and security processes
  • A call on women leaders to rise to the occasion at all areas and sectors
  • Join in the impact analysis on the collaborative efforts of women in many countries
  • Recognize the significant gap that exist and reflect on the need to make every effort to promote women participation in peace processes on Gender parity, meaningful participations, appointment of women into key leadership positions, support mechanism for women etc
  • Work hard to support women efforts financially to fully walk the talk on policy …
  • Allocation of more human, financial resources to support women roles and enforce effective monitoring and evaluation
  • Effective budgeting and accounting for WPS agenda
  • The involvement of the local, using the button up approach
  • Measure what strategic approach taken by countries to implement the 1325 and what indicators are coherent?

  • What training efforts have been made and what best practices can be migrated and in which formats or approach? The symposium was enriched with great panel discussion on the theme and topical issues relating to women in peace keeping.
